Born on April 24, 1941, Deas was one of the key figures at the Latin American Centre in Oxford, an institution that was founded by Sir Raymond Carr in the 1960s.

Who was Malcolm Deas?

Deas was an English historian with expertise in the study of Latin America in general and Colombia in particular.

He studied modern history at New College, Oxford, and went on to become a Fellow of All Souls College and St Antony’s College. Deas taught at Oxford University for nearly five decades until his retirement in 2008.

He wrote extensively about the country’s history, both in scholarly journals and in popular magazines like The New Statesman, The Listener, The Spectator, The London Review of Books, and The Times.

In the early 1990s, he worked as an advisor to Colombian President César Gaviria, earning him the Cross of Boyacá and an OBE from the British government.

He was also a member of the Order of Andrés Bello (Venezuela) and the Orden de Mérito (Ecuador), and received an Honorary Doctorate from the Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá.

In 2008, Deas was made a citizen of Colombia.

He died on July 29, 2023, at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneer of Colombian historiography, not only in the Global North but also in Colombia itself.
