He had his tryst with the boxing world as an amateur before deciding to venture alone to the United States in 1990. Three years later, in 1993, the opportunity arose for Nonito Jr. to join his father in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, California.

The couple sealed their commitment to each other in a private ceremony in Carmel, California, surrounded by their closest relatives on August 8, 2008.
