Born in San Francisco in 1927, Cunningham came to Hollywood to seek an entertainment career before enlisting in the United States Navy. During WWII, he served on the PGM11 minesweeper craft. During his service, he was a member of the Fort Emory Drum and Bugle Corps, which toured the Pacific theater.
Cunningham earned popularity as a singer after the war. He appeared on NBC’s Voices of Walter Schumann and The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show, and he sang on practically every major Hollywood studio’s film soundtracks.

He also voiced Ken in Mattel’s early Barbie albums at this time, decades before Ryan Gosling played Barbie’s beau on the big screen. Cunningham also performed on tour with Judy Garland and Dinah Shore.
He soon expanded his business by opening his talent agency called Pacific Artists Agency which started with only 10 voice-over artists before expanding.
It only took six years before he changed his company’s name to Cunningham & Associates. By 1971, the company’s success had him opening a second office in New York and another in Chicago the year later.
Cunningham retired in 1989 and went on to publish his autobiography, I Wonder What Became of Me, in 2014.
