Douglas S. Wright, an American politician and attorney who served as mayor of Topeka, Kansas, and a candidate for the US Congress, was born in 1948 and passed away on July 27, 2023. Wright, the mayor of Topeka from 1983 to 1989, was the son of Chuck Wright, another previous mayor of the city who presided over it from 1965 to 1969.

Before beating then-Mayor Bill McCormick in 1983, Wright worked as an assistant city attorney. Wright was 34 years old when he was elected. He held the office of mayor from 1983 to 1989, and he is recognized as an assertive, effective, and hardworking leader.

Douglas S. Wright had a total of two children Sara and Adam Wright. Republican elected officials approached Wright in the 1980s and 1990s about challenging Jim Slattery in the congressional election. At Washburn, Slattery and Wright were fraternity brothers. Wright ran for the Republican nomination for the 2nd District congressional seat in 1996 after the seat fell vacant following Sam Brownback’s election to the U.S. Senate.
