Doug Wright, Topeka’s mayor from 1983 to 1989, passed away on Thursday at the age of 74.
Chuck Wright, Topeka’s mayor from 1965 to 1969, was Wright’s father. Chuck Wright is best known for leading Topeka through the tornado’s aftermath in 1966.

Doug Wright graduated from Washburn University School of Law, then worked in the Topeka city attorney’s office before gaining election as mayor at age 34, at a time when Topeka was administered by a city commission.
Wright won reelection as mayor in 1985, the year the capital city shifted to a new form of government incorporating a city council. He later lost to Harry W. “Butch” Felker in the 1989 mayoral election.

City of Topeka officials have confirmed that former mayor Doug Wright has passed away. Topeka Police officers responded to a report of a deceased person around 4:30 p.m. and later identified the deceased as Wright. They believe Wright, who was 75, died of natural causes. The city has offered its condolences to Wright’s loved ones. Wright presided over the city from 1983 to 1989, 20 years after his father Chuck Wright served as mayor.
