Pat Carney, a pioneer in giving women leadership positions in journalism and politics in Canada, passed away at the age of 88.

In British Columbia, Pat Carney was the first female Conservative elected to the legislature and the first female Conservative appointed to the Senate.

May 1935 saw the birth of Carney in Shanghai, China. He received his education in Canada and went on to work as a journalist and economic consultant in the Northwest Territories and Yukon.

According to her website, she started her career in journalism in the 1960s and was the first woman to write a business column for a daily newspaper, such as the Vancouver Sun and Vancouver Province. She later admitted to the Senate during her retirement address in 2007 that she had never planned to enter politics.
