Tributes have been pouring in from social media after her death was announced.
“Sinead O’Connor has died today. She was fearless, outspoken, brave. She was famous for calling out the roman Catholic Church for abuse of children and then ripping a photo of the pope at the time. This caused controversy at the time but she was right. RIP Sinead O’Connor,” Rob Walker wrote.

“Sinead O’Connor was a trailblazer. Fearless, uncompromising & a superlative talent. Proved to be ahead of her time, again & again. Her passing at 56 is a devastating loss. This snippet from an all-timer of a live rendition of Nothing Compares 2 U perfectly captures her spirit,” Steve Armour also wrote.
“Heavy hearted at the loss of Sinead O’Connor. Wanted to reachout to her often but didn’t.I remember her launch. Astounding presence. Voice that cracked stone with force & by increment. As beautiful as any girl around & never traded on that card. I Loved that about her. Iconoclast,” said Alison Moyet.
“A great Irish poet and singer left us today. She was beautiful, courageous and wore her heart on her sleeve. She was before her time. Nothing will ever compare to Sinéad O’Connor. Rest easy Sinéad,” Seamus Heaney.
