He began playing at a young age.  The Dodgers discovered him when he was 15, during a showcase in Oaxaca in June 2012, on the same scouting trip to Mexico that resulted in the signing of Yasiel Puig.

Julio Urías got signed by the Dodgers on August 12, his 16th birthday. In 2015, MLB.com ranked him as the eighth-best prospect in baseball, and Baseball America listed him as the tenth-best prospect.

He was promoted to the Los Angeles Dodgers and made his main league debut on May 27, 2016, against the New York Mets. He was the youngest starting pitcher to make his Major League debut at the age of 19.

When he started game four of the 2016 National League Championship Series, he became the youngest pitcher to ever start a postseason game. He gave up four runs in three and a half innings.

In 2021, he led the National League in victories, and in 2022, he led the league in earned run average. In 2021 and 2022, he was named to the All-MLB Second Team.
