Kowal was drafted in the second round, 33rd overall, by the Sabres in the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft. He went on to play 22 games in the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres between 1976 and 1978.

The rest of his career, which lasted from 1976 to 1981, was spent in the minor American Hockey League.

Born on February 3, 1956, in Toronto, Ontario, Kowal drifted out of the public eye after retiring.

Unfortunately, on July 25, 2023, it was announced that the legendary Canadian left wing had passed on. There was no information about him suffering ill health prior to his death.

His hockey career continued 4 more seasons playing in the AHL.
