Eliza, his mother, was a teacher, and Earl, his father, was an electronics repairman. He used to hang out at Al Lopez Field during the Cincinnati Reds’ spring training and work as a vendor at Tampa Stadium as a kid.
Fred McGriff played in the Major League Baseball (MLB) for six teams from 1986 through 2004. He was one of the most consistent power hitters of the 1990s, averaging more than 80 runs batted in (RBI) every year from 1988 to 2002, and he was the first player since the dead-ball era to lead both leagues in home runs — the American League (AL) in 1989 and the National League (NL) in 1992.

He was voted the Most Valuable Player of the 1994 World Series after his pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the ninth inning levelled the score at 7-7, with the National League winning in 10 innings. Every year, McGriff finished in the top 10 of the voting for his league’s Most Valuable Player Award.
Fred McGriff currently works in the Braves’ front office as Special Assistant to Baseball Operations. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on July 23, 2023.
