In 1945, Ruth Handler and her husband, Elliot Handler, along with their friend Harold “Matt” Matson, founded Mattel, a company that initially manufactured picture frames. However, they soon shifted their focus to toys.
One of Ruth’s most significant contributions to the toy industry was the creation of the iconic Barbie doll. Inspired by watching her daughter, Barbara, play with paper dolls, Handler noticed that she and her friends often enjoyed imagining themselves as adults and acting out various scenarios.

This observation led her to the idea of developing a three-dimensional adult-like doll. In 1959, Mattel introduced the Barbie doll at the American International Toy Fair in New York City. Barbie quickly became a cultural phenomenon and a global icon of fashion and femininity.
Ruth Handler served as the president of Mattel from its inception until 1975, and she remained active in the company until the late 1970s. Ruth Handler passed away on April 27, 2002, in Los Angeles, California. Her legacy and contributions to the toy industry continue to be celebrated to this day.
