Jim Goodwin started his professional career with Celtic, one of the top clubs in Scotland. However, he didn’t make many appearances for the first team and had loan spells at several clubs, including Stockport County and Scunthorpe United.

In 2002, Goodwin joined the Scottish club Hamilton Academical, where he had a successful spell, making over 150 appearances. After leaving Hamilton, Goodwin had stints with various Scottish clubs, including Stockport County, St. Mirren, and Ross County.

Following his retirement as a player in 2017, Goodwin transitioned into coaching and management. In 2018, he was appointed the player-manager of Alloa Athletic, a Scottish club competing in the lower divisions.

Goodwin guided Alloa to promotion to the Scottish Championship in his first season in charge. In 2019, he left Alloa to become the manager of St. Mirren, the club where he had enjoyed success as a player. He is currently the manager of Dundee United.
