Tennis star Gael Monfils was born to his parents, Sylvette Cartesse and Rufin Monfils.

His father, Rufin, hails from Guadeloupe, and used to play professional football, before he resigned to take up a job with France Telecom.
His mother, Sylvette, hails from Martinique and is a trained nurse by profession.
