Ewen Jones, a well-respected federal Queensland MP and business identity who served six years as the federal member for Herbert, a seat encompassing the far north city of Townsville and Magnetic and Palm Islands, after being elected in 2010 dies on Thursday (July 13, 2023) after a long battle with cancer.

Mr. Jones’ death was confirmed by Emma, one of his three children who tweeted: “Ewen Jones passed away around 5 am this morning, surrounded by family. He is at peace now. I am so lucky to have had him as my dad.”
Born on 7 March 1960, Mr. Jones served six years as the federal member for Herbert, a seat encompassing the far north city of Townsville and Magnetic and Palm Islands, after being elected in 2010.

He won the Herbert district in 2010, with a 2.05% swing against the Labor candidate, former Townsville Mayor Tony Mooney. Jones had lived in Townsville, Australia, for many years.

He replaced long-serving Liberal MP Peter Lindsay as the federal member for Herbert in 2010 when Labor under former prime minister Julia Gillard was re-elected but without a majority
In 2016, he was defeated by Labor’s Cathy O’Toole by 37 votes in an election in which then-Liberal Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was just narrowly re-elected.
He worked as an auctioneer from 1990 to 2010 and in finance firm sales from 1998 to 2001 before entering politics.
He also worked as a residential real estate consultant for two years until 2010.
He will be best remembered as a staunch advocate for North Queensland and an MP who was respected on both sides of politics.
He is survived by his wife Linda and three children: Abbie, Emma, and Andrew.
