Born on June 10, 1961, Coto was the executive producer and showrunner of Star Trek: Enterprise in its final season, and executive producer of four seasons of 24. He was also an executive producer and writer for the fifth season of the Showtime television series Dexter.
Coto graduated from the American Film Institute. His specialty lies in the sci-fi and fantasy genres.
In 1990, Brian Helgeland and Coto sold a script, The Ticking Man, for $1 million, but the film was never made.

He wrote and directed an episode of Tales from the Crypt and also wrote an episode for and produced The Outer Limits when it was revived on Showtime in 1995.
Coto was given the chance to create and write a series for Showtime after The Outer Limits was canceled. The resulting series was Odyssey 5 which starred Peter Weller.
But Coto is perhaps best known for his work on Fox’s hit action drama series 24, of which he wrote 27 episodes between 2006 and 2010. He also worked on the show’s sequels, 24: Live Another Day and 24: Legacy, the latter of which he served as co-showrunner.
In addition to his television credits, Coto worked on several films, including the 1992 cult slasher Dr. Giggles, which he directed and co-wrote. He also directed the 1990 horror film Playroom, the 1997 superhero flick Star Kid, and the Disney Channel movies The Other Me and Zenon: The Zequel.
