Magda Szubanski was born to her parents, Zbigniew Szubanski and Margaret Szubanski.

Her mother Margaret is of Scottish-Irish heritage, while her father, Zbigniew, is of Polish ancestry. He fought during the Polish resistance movement in the second World War.

Magdalene Szubanski is a strong supporter of LGBT rights and same-sex marriage in Australia, and is widely known for her memoir titled Reckoning.

Magda doubles as a comedy actress, known for appearing as Sharon Strzelecki in the TV comedy show Kath & Kim.

She began her entertainment career as far back as 1985, as a writer and performer of sketch comedy, and rose to fame as “one of the most recognized and well-liked Australian TV personalities.”

As a TV personality, Magda played “Guest Announcer” on the final season of Sunday Night Takeaway’s. In 2021, she began hosting the Nine Network’s revival of The Weakest Link.

As an actress, Magda appeared on a number of films and TV shows such as “Fast Forward, Kath & Kim, Babe, Babe: Pig in the City, Happy Feet, and Happy Feet Two”, and the Australian TV series “Who Do You Think You Are?”.

For her contribution to film and television, Magda “was appointed an officer in the general division of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2019.”
