Nylander was selected by the Maple Leafs in the first round, eighth overall, of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
He made his NHL debut in 2016-17, scoring 61 points in each of the next two seasons.
He sat out the first two months of the 2018-19 season before signing with the Maple Leafs, finishing with 27 points (seven goals, 20 assists) in 54 games, but rebounded in 2019-20, scoring an NHL career-high 31 goals and finishing with 59 points in 68 games.
Despite being born in Canada, on 12 November 2012, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) ruled that Nylander was eligible to represent Sweden in international play.
He made his senior debut for Sweden at the 2017 IIHF World Championship. He was exceptional as Sweden won gold. He led his team by example, scoring with 14 points in 10 games, and was named tournament MVP.
