He was 81.

A summary of Dick Sheridan’s career

Sheridan took over at N.C. State in 1986 after a successful run at Furman. The Wolfpack were coming off three straight 3-8 seasons but went 8-3-1 in Sheridan’s first year, earning a Peach Bowl berth.

N.C. State was 4-7 in 1987 but did not lose another game under Sheridan, winning the Peach Bowl in 1988 and nine wins in 1991 and 1992. Sheridan resigned in the summer of 1993, citing health concerns. He had an impressive 52-29-3 record with the Wolfpack but did not coach again.

From 1978 through 1985, he was the head coach at Furman, where he went 69-23-1 and won eight Southern Conference championships. In his final three years, he made a mark in Raleigh by defeating the Wolfpack twice.

Sheridan was elected into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2020 after winning the Bobby Dodd College Football Coach of the Year award in his first season at North Carolina State.

After his retirement from coaching, Sheridan owned several sporting goods stores and worked in real estate in the Myrtle Beach area.
