The pair become fond of each other and as expected, Evans proposed to her after his first Tour de France.
In January 2012, the couple adopted their son, Robel, from Ethiopia, at the age of six months.
Three years later, Evans and Chiara separated, bringing an end to their 10-year-old marriage.

Why did Cadel Evans split with wife?
Chiara Passerini blamed their divorce on Evans’ demanding career.
According to her, his demanding career put undue strain on the relationship.
Announcing their separation in May 2015, Evans told the Herald Sun:
‘Some time ago, Chiara and I chose to separate. We remain good friends and in regular contact. As parents, and in the interest of our family we ask that people respect our privacy.’
