Cadel was born to Helen Cocks, a bank manager, and Paul Evans, a council foreman.

At the age of seven, he was hit in the head by a horse and spent seven days in an induced coma.

His parents separated in 1986, and he first moved with his mother to Armidale, New South Wales. He moved again with his mother to the Melbourne suburb of Eltham, Victoria, where his mother still lives.

Cadel was taught how to ride a bike by his father.

In a 2011 interview, after Cadel won the Tour de France, his father said that he didn’t envision that his son would make a great career out of cycling.

An excited Mr. Paul Evans said: “When I taught Cadel to ride it was just the sort of thing a dad does. I didn’t expect it to lead to this. But Cadel really loved his bike from the moment he could ride and you could never get him off it from the age of four.”
