During her 33-year career at NASA and its predecessor, she developed a reputation for mastering complicated manual computations and was a pioneer in the use of computers to execute the jobs. She was called a “human computer” because of her incredible mathematical skills and capacity to work with space trajectories while having so little technology and recognition at the time.
Two NASA facilities are named after her. On May 5, 2016, the agency’s Langley Research Centre in Hampton, Virginia dedicated a new 40,000-square-foot (3,700 m2) building named the “Katherine G. Johnson Computational Research Facility.” On September 22, 2017, the institution formally opened its doors
