Shane van Gisbergen won his first NASCAR Cup Series debut driving the No. 91 for Trackhouse Racing at the 2023 Grant Park 220 in Chicago, becoming the first driver to do so since Indy car racer Johnny Rutherford accomplished the feat driving the No. 13 for Smokey Yunick in 1963, and only the seventh in NASCAR history and the first in the modern era of the sport.

He was also the first New Zealander to win a Cup Series race. He and Paul Morris are the only drivers in Mount Panorama history to have won all three main automobile racing events: the Bathurst 1000, the Bathurst 6 Hour, and the Bathurst 12 Hour.

Aside from his NASCAR Cup Series victory in 2023, he has three Supercars Championship victories (2016, 2021, and 2022), 80 wins, and 46 pole positions, making him the fourth most successful racing driver in Supercars Championship history. He won the Bathurst 1000 in 2020 and 2022, both times with Garth Tander.
