He spent much of his boyhood in Madrid, Spain, where his father was stationed by the United States Air Force. His father introduced him to Baseball.

When Maddux returned to Las Vegas, Nevada, he and his brother Mike, who later became a professional player, trained under the direction of Ralph Meder, a former major league scout.

Greg Maddux was selected by the Cubs in the second round of the 1984 Major League Baseball draft and chose to sign rather than honour a commitment to play collegiate baseball at Arizona. On September 3, 1986, he made his major league debut.

He played in the MLB for 23 seasons from 1986 to 2008. During his career, Maddux played for four different teams: the Chicago Cubs (1986-1992, 2004-2006), Atlanta Braves (1993-2003), Los Angeles Dodgers (2006, 2008), and San Diego Padres (2007-2008).

Maddux won four consecutive Cy Young Awards from 1992 to 1995, a remarkable feat that showcased his dominance during that period. Greg Maddux retired after the 2008 season, leaving behind an impressive legacy. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014, his first year of eligibility.
