Woods was a promising middle-distance runner before becoming a cyclist, setting Canadian national junior records in the mile and 3000 meters in 2005 and winning the gold medal in the 1500 meters at the 2005 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships.

In 2013, Woods made his professional cycling debut with Team Québecor Garneau.

Woods declared his intention to join Cannondale for the 2016 cycling season on August 20, 2015.

Woods was officially nominated to Canada’s Olympic team in 2016. Woods was also named to the 2017 Giro d’Italia start list. He finished the 2017 Giro, his maiden grand tour, in 38th place, with two fifth-place stage finishes and a stage win for teammate Pierre Rolland.

In 2018, Woods scored what he described as “the best result of my career” by finishing second in the Liège–Bastogne–Liège race.

In July 2019, he was named in the start list for the 2019 Tour de France. He also competed in the 2021 and 2022 editions.

Woods is competing in this year’s Tour de France and is poised to take home the €500,000 prize money.
