American scientist and solid-state physicist, John B. Goodenough did not have any children. However, he was married to Irene Wiseman for over 50 years before her death.

Goodenough was born to a father who was a professor in the history of religion at Yale University. He also attended Yale University, where his father taught, received a BS in mathematics, and also became a member of Skull and Bones.

John B. Goodenough served the U. S Army as a meteorologist in World War II and went to the University of Chicago to complete a master’s degree. He was also awarded a Ph. D. in physics in 1952.
His doctoral supervisor was Clarence Zener, a theorist in electrical breakdown. John also worked and studied with physicists like Enrico Fermi and John A. Simpson.
While at Chicago, he met his would-be wife, Irene Wiseman who was then a graduate student of History. The two were married from 1954 until Wiseman’s death in 2016.
