Rina Sawayama is a Japanese-British singer, songwriter, and model. Sawayama was born in the Japanese city of Niigata. She is the daughter of Noriko Sawayama. The name of her father is not public knowledge.

She lived there until she was five years old when her family decided to relocate to London, where she was raised and now resides. She is in the UK on an indefinite leave to remain (ILR) visa.
The family’s original plan, according to Sawayama, was for her to return to Japan when she turned ten, but they ultimately decided to stay in London. Sawayama struggled to understand her teachers and peers due to her inability to communicate in English.

She began posting music covers on Myspace at the age of sixteen, and during the sixth form, she formed the hip-hop group, Lazy Lion. Her breakthrough came with the release of her self-titled debut studio album, “SAWAYAMA,” in 2020.
The album received critical acclaim for its genre-blending sound, thought-provoking lyrics, and powerful vocals. It includes tracks such as “STFU!,” “XS,” and “Comme des Garçons (Like the Boys).”
