Disabled Rights activists acknowledged Nina Simone as a disabled Black activist and bipolar savant who deserves her place not only in music and civil rights history but in disability history as well.

According to a biographer, Simone took medication from the mid-1960s onward, although this was supposedly only known to a small group of intimates. After her death, the medication was confirmed as the anti-psychotic Trilafon, which Simone’s friends and caretakers sometimes surreptitiously mixed into her food when she refused to follow her treatment plan.

Was Nina Simone A Genius?
Nina Simone was recognised as a musical genius almost from birth. At just 6 months, her mother realised that her toddler could recognise musical notes on paper and it scares her. By the age of three, Simone was already playing complete songs on the piano blues and gospel tunes at church.
