Heather Mack, along with her boyfriend at the time, Tommy Schaefer, was accused and convicted of killing her mother, Sheila von Wiese-Mack. The motive for the murder was initially reported to be related to an inheritance dispute.

During the trial, it was revealed that Mack was the beneficiary of her mother’s $1.6 million trust fund, which would pay her small annual payments until the age of 30, and then the balance.

During the court case, up to $150,000 in legal expenses, plus smaller payments for food and personal expenses, was initially approved. The trust fund’s final disposition was resolved in a 2018 settlement in favour of Heather’s daughter.

In 2015, both Heather Mack and Tommy Schaefer were found guilty of the murder and were sentenced by an Indonesian court. Heather Mack was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Tommy Schaefer received an 18-year sentence.

Mack was released early in 2021 for good behaviour after serving seven years of her 10-year prison sentence in Indonesia, according to Mack’s US-based attorney, Vanessa Favia. She was deported back to the United States and arrested at a Chicago airport by the FBI.
