Modi himself grew up in a lower-middle-class family, where his father ran a tea stall, and his mother worked as a domestic help.
At the beginning of his political career, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization, which helped shape his political ideology.
In 1985, Modi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the political wing of the RSS, and rose through the ranks. He became actively involved in various party positions in Gujarat, and later served as the Chief Minister of Gujarati for three terms back-to-back, until 2014, when he became Prime Minister.
