Big Pokey was a popular Houston rapper who was known very well-known in the city. He started his career in the entertainment industry with Houston producer, DJ Screw in the early ’90s, releasing songs on many of DJ Screw’s mixtapes. He was featured on Screw’s mixtape June 27th Freestyle which became a landmark album in chopped and screwed hip hop.

In 1999, Big Pokey released his full-length album dubbed Hardest Pit in the Litter. In 2000, he returned with another album titled D-Game 2000, which had mid-tempo 808-driven beats featuring a lot of other Houston peers. The following year, he collaborated with Wreckshop Wolfpack for Tha Collabo and also returned in 2002 with another solo album Da Sky’s Da Limit.
He was reported dead on June 18, 2023. He died after collapsing on stage while performing.
“Justice of The Peace Tom Gillam III has confirmed that Houston Rapper Milton Powell, better known as Big Pokey passed away at St. Elizabeth Hospital,” CBS affiliate KFDM reported.
