Villeneuve, who has always been interested in cars and fast driving, began his professional career in snowmobile racing in his home province of Quebec. After winning the US and Canadian Formula Atlantic championships in 1976, he was offered a drive in Formula One with the McLaren team at the 1977 British Grand Prix.
He was hired by Ferrari for the rest of the season and drove for the Italian team from 1978 until his death in 1982. In his brief career at the highest level, he won six Grand Prix races. In 1979, he finished four points behind teammate Jody Scheckter in the championship.
