Robert Gottlieb cause of death – Robert Gottlieb, the illustrious editor at Simon & Schuster, Alfred A. Knopf and The New Yorker died of natural causes on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at a New York hospital, according to Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group.

The death, at a hospital, was confirmed by his wife, Maria Tucci.

Gottlieb, who was born on April 29, 1931, had one of the largest runs of any editor after WWII and helped establish the modern publishing canon.

Gottlieb began his career at Simon & Schuster as an editorial assistant to Jack Goodman, the editor-in-chief, and in 1968 moved to Alfred A. Knopf as editor-in-chief, eventually becoming president, together with Nina Bourne and Anthony Schulte.

He worked with Simon & Schuster and Knopf for three decades, turning hundreds of manuscripts into well-received novels, many of which sold millions of copies, won prizes, and made authors wealthy and famous.

Colleagues praised him for being astute as well as sensitive to authors’ fragile egos.

His abilities earned him a devoted author following, and he rose to the position of president as well as editor-in-chief at Knopf.

Gottlieb departed Alfred A. Knopf in 1987 to succeed William Shawn as editor of The New Yorker and stayed in that position until 1992.

Since 1998, he contributed frequently to The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, and The New York Times Book Review.

Mr. Gottlieb married Muriel Higgins in 1952 but they divorced after having a son, Roger.

In 1969, he married actress Ms. Tucci. Lizzie and Nicky were their two children.

He is survived by his children and twin grandsons, in addition to Ms. Tucci.
