Grey began his career at age 10, in the early 1940s at the Cleveland Play House’s Curtain Pullers children’s theatre program, where he appeared in productions such as Grandma Slyboots, Jack of Tarts, and a starring role in On Borrowed Time.

At the age of 20, he began performing as a featured artist at New York’s Copacabana nightclub.

He changed his surname from Katz to Grey early in his career to avoid the stigma of having a surname with an identifiable ethnicity.

Grey made his Broadway debut as “Joel Kaye” in Borscht Capades and began his professional television career on The Colgate Comedy Hour from 1951 through 1954.
