The Toronto Blue Jays released pitcher Anthony Bass on Friday, June 9 2023, just one day after he stated that an anti-LGBTQ+ social media post he shared last in May 2023, was not hateful.

The team now has seven days to trade or place Bass on waivers. The post Anthony Bass shared on Instagram was calling for boycotts of Target and Bud Light for their support of the LGBTQ+ community in May 2023.
Bass was scheduled to catch a ceremonial first pitch from Toronto LGBTQ+ activist Lezlie Lee Kam before Friday’s game against Minnesota as part of the Blue Jays’ fourth annual Pride Weekend celebration.

Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said that the team values the LBGTQ community and expressed regret for any mishandling of the situation.
“We definitely don’t want anyone feeling any hurt,” Atkins said. “We’re focused on the environment. We care about this community. We care about our fans. And I deeply regret if people do feel that way. It certainly was not our intention.”
