Joel Lundqvist is the twin brother of Henrik Lundqvist. The twins grew up in Åre, Jämtland, an area where alpine skiing is the most popular winter activity, though they chose to play ice hockey over the more popular winter sports

When their father Peter took the twins to see Västra Frölunda HC play in Scandinavium in Gothenburg, their interest in hockey grew even stronger.

Henrik has stated that he and Joel were fierce competitors growing up, both in sports and in school. Henrik and Joel saw many games in Scandinavium, where Frölunda became their favourite team because Peter worked for a company that sponsored Frölunda.

While Henrik gained fame as a goaltender in the NHL, Joel pursued a career as a professional ice hockey forward. Joel Lundqvist has primarily played in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), representing Frolunda HC, the same team where he and Henrik started their hockey careers.

He has had a successful career in Sweden, serving as the captain of Frolunda HC for many years. Despite taking different paths in their hockey careers, Henrik and Joel have maintained a close relationship both on and off the ice. They have often been supportive of each other’s accomplishments and have occasionally played together on the Swedish national team.
