The Iron Sheik, born Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri in Damghan, Iran, in 1942, began his wrestling career in the Greco-Roman style and represented his country in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City.

He immigrated to the United States and discovered the bizarre world of professional wrestling, debuting in the WWF (now known as the WWE) in 1979 before bouncing around regional promotions until rejoining the organization in 1983, the same year he defeated Bob Backlund for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship belt with his signature finisher, the Camel Clutch.

What is the Camel Clutch?

A camel clutch can also refer to a rear chin lock used while seated on an opponent’s back, without placing the arms on the thighs.

How to do the Camel Clutch

Starting the hold, the wrestler stands over a face-down opponent.

He reaches down and slightly lifts the opposing wrestler, sits on his back, and crosses both of his opponent’s arms across his thighs, usually locking at least one by resting the arm in the crook of his knee.

Once the wrestler has the opponent’s arms where he wants them, he reaches forward, cups his hands so that his fingers interlock, and grips the opponent’s chin in his cupped hands before leaning back, tugging on the opponent’s chin and providing pressure to his back.

When was Iron Sheik’s last match?

The Iron Sheik’s final match took place on April 24, 2010, at MWF Soul Survivor VI in Melrose, Massachusetts, when he teamed up with TNA star “Black Machismo” Jay Lethal to defeat “Stalker” Dylan Kage (with Paul Bearer) after forcing Kage to submit to the camel clutch.

His last WWE appearance was during WrestleMania X-Seven.

He returned for one night only, winning a Gimmick Battle Royal and rekindling his feud with Slaughter.
