Some claim he earned up to $5,000 a week in the late 1970s and early 1980s. While these aren’t exact data, they likely illustrate the Iron Sheik’s relative success at one point.
Sheik may have faced financial difficulties near the end of his life.
This is because Iron Sheik’s managers, Page and Jian Magen, had to crowdfund $40,441 in August 2013 to develop, direct, and create the documentary, Iranian Legend: The Iron Sheik Story.
The documentary was supposed to be released in 2008 under the title Iron Sheik: From A to Z. Sheik’s documentary, but it was instead released in 2014 under the title The Sheik.
Sheik debuted in professional wrestling in 1972 with the Minnesota-based AWA, and he got his first chance with WWE in 1979.

Sheik joined WWE full-time in 1983 and defeated Bob Backlund for the WWE Championship on December 26, 1983, in Madison Square Garden in New York City, ending Backlund’s reign of 2,135 days, the second-longest in WWE title history.

While Sheik would never win another singles title in WWE, he was a part of the first title change in WrestleMania history when he and Nikolai Volkoff defeated Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo of The U.S. Express for the WWE Tag Team Championships at the first WrestleMania in 1985.
Sheik was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.
In more recent years, Sheik became known for his social media presence, as his Twitter account garnered over 600,000 followers.
Sheik’s account became an internet sensation due to its unique musings, profane language, and disdain for Hogan, the man who beat him for the WWE Championship.
Sheik passed away on June 7, 2023, at age 81.
He is survived by his wife of many years Caryl J. Peterson and two daughters; Nikki Vaziri and Tanya Vaziri.
In May 2003, his first daughter, Marissa Jeanne Vaziri, was slain by her boyfriend, Charles Warren Reynolds. She was 26 at the time.
