Sheik grew up in a working-class family with few resources and no running water.
Despite the fact that his passport stated March 15, he celebrated his birthday on September 9 due to his family’s use of the Gregorian calendar and the Solar Hijri calendar.
He loved Iranian Olympic Gold Medalist wrestler Gholamreza Takhti as a child, and he later became an amateur wrestler; he also worked as a bodyguard for Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and his family for numerous years.

Sheik competed in the Greco-Roman wrestling competition for Iran at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.

He joined WWE full-time in 1983 and defeated Bob Backlund for the WWE Championship on December 26, 1983, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, ending Backlund’s reign of 2,135 days, the second-longest in WWE history.
Though Sheik never won another singles title in WWE, he was a part of the first title change in WrestleMania history when he and Nikolai Volkoff defeated Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo of The US Express for the WWE Tag Team Championships at the first WrestleMania in 1985.
