He started his acting career on stage in 1968 when he appeared in The Devils. His TV career also began that same year when he starred in the soap opera Motel. He went on to appear in several tv shows including Riptide, Woobinda, Animal Doctor, Skippy, The Rovers, Division 4, Homicide, Matlock Police, and more.
Thompson made his film debut as well in 1968 when he played a role in That Lady from Peking. That same year, he was cast for his first lead role in Silo 15, however, the movie did not come out until 1971.
He went on to star in the title role in Petersen in 1974. Some of his other movies in the ’70s include Human Target (1974), Sunday Too Far Away (1975), Caddie (1976), and more.
