Born on August 31, 1940, Jack Thompson started his acting career on stage in 1968 when he appeared in The Devils. His TV career also began that same year when he starred in the soap opera Motel. He went on to appear in several tv shows including Riptide, Woobinda, Animal Doctor, Skippy, The Rovers, Division 4, Homicide, Matlock Police, and more.

He made his film debut as well in 1968 when he played a role in That Lady from Peking. That same year, he was cast for his first lead role in Silo 15, however, the movie did not come out until 1971.

Thompson went on to star in the title role in Petersen in 1974. Some of his other movies in the ’70s include Human Target (1974), Sunday Too Far Away (1975), Caddie (1976), and more.

He deliberately made a decision to take up character parts after starring in a few movies in the ’70s. He guest starred in an episode of Luke’s Kingdom, and also played the second lead in Mad Dog Morgan (1976). Some of his other film credits during that period also include The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith and Because He’s My Friend all in 1978.

Thompson took a one year break from acting and returned to the Australian movie industry with his first film dubbed The Journalist (1979). In 1980, he won Best Supporting Actor at Cannes for his role in Breaker Morant (1980).

His international career also became very successful. He went to New Zealand to shoot two films Bad Blood (1982) and The Man from Snowy River (1982). Other international movie credits include A Woman Called Golda (1982), The Letter (1982), Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (1983), and more.
