Watling, who was born on May 11, 1925, was a one-club man, with Bristol Rovers being his lone senior team.

Prior to joining The Pirates, he had previously played for Plain House Youth Club, the Royal Navy, and Saint Andrew’s Boys Club in Avonmouth, as well as a failed trial at Plymouth Argyle at the end of WWII.

He joined Bristol Rovers in October 1945, initially as an amateur, before signing his first professional contract in January 1947.

Watling retired from football in 1963 after 323 League appearances and 19 goals. He did, however, stay with the club for another two years as a coach and scout before retiring in 1965 after twenty years.

Following his retirement from the sport, he worked as a storekeeper at Bristol’s Glenside Hospital.

Watling was Bristol Rovers’ oldest living player as of 2019.

Watling was announced as the final of ten first entrants into the Bristol Rovers Hall of Fame on April 30, 2021.
