He was known as the Branch Secretary of the NUM branch of Tower Colliery in 1973. He led flying pickets, a highly mobile type of picketing from Tower over the following week to every pit in the South Wales region, as a result of which the pits had met and agreed to support the 1984/85 national miners strike.

O’Sullivan was also a great supporter of the Labor Party. He had been a member since he was 16. He endorsed Jeremy Corbyn’s campaign in 2016 in the Labor Party leadership election.
“I am so sad and shocked to hear of the death of Tyrone O’Sullivan, a giant of the Labour and trade union movement and a hero to me. He was a friend and an example of how to fight to change society,” Local Labour Party MP Beth Winter said after his death was announced.
