In 1955, she received a B.A. in history from Mount Holyoke College. She was a long-time aide to New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller before her marriage, whom Kissinger recommended to him in 1964 while she was a student at Harvard.

Her first job was as Kissinger’s researcher on a Rockefeller task force; once the task force’s work was completed, she went on to work for Rockefeller at the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. She later worked as the director of international studies for Rockefeller’s Commission on Critical Choices for Americans.
