As well as being a radio presenter, Mr. Carey was an author and worked as a national cricket correspondent. Aftab Gulzar, the executive editor at BBC Radio Derby, told the station Mr. Carey had an “incredible life”.

The former BBC radio presenter died after being rescued from the River Derwent on Saturday morning.

Michael Carey, 87, was recovered from the river at Darley Abbey Mills and taken to hospital but died shortly after, Derbyshire Constabulary said.

Mr. Carey, who lived in the local area, hosted Memorable Melodies on BBC Radio Derby for almost 20 years and stepped down from the position in 2019. Police are investigating how he might have found himself in the river.

Michael Carey: Former BBC radio presenter dies aged 87 after river rescue

A man who died after being rescued from a river has been named as the former presenter of BBC Radio Derby, Michael Carey.

Derbyshire Police confirmed that a body was pulled from the River Derwent at Darley Abbey Mills on Saturday morning. Mr. Carey, 87, was taken to hospital but sadly died shortly afterward.

The former radio host presented Memorable Melodies for nearly 20 years before he stepped down from the role in 2019.
