Raymond Francis Reynolds, also known as Raymond Francis McFadden, was a carpenter and later a railroad worker. He was born on December 4, 1903, in Kansas.
Her mother Maxine Reynolds worked as a housewife and homemaker. She took in laundry for income, while they lived in a shack on Magnolia Street in El Paso. “We may have been poor,” Debbie Reynolds said in a 1963 interview, “but we always had something to eat, even if Dad had to go out in the desert and shoot jackrabbits.”

Debbie Reynolds was born Mary Frances Reynolds on April 1, 1932, in El Paso, Texas. She was the second child of Raymond and Maxine Reynolds, with an older brother named William Reynolds. The family later moved to Burbank, California, where Debbie Reynolds grew up.
