James Blunt wrote “Monsters” as a tribute to his father, who was diagnosed with stage IV chronic kidney disease and faced the possibility of losing his life.
In an interview with Good Morning Britain Blunt said, “Really that has been an amazing moment. Because when you realise your father’s mortality it’s a great opportunity to say the things I’d like to say to him. So I have written a song called Monsters for him.”

Lisa Wilkinson, an Australian television presenter, said she was “left bawling” after watching the song’s music video. “Go on, have a little watch and see if you have a heart, or merely a sharp, pointy piece of flint where it should be,” Newshub’s Monika Barton said of the music video.
The lyrics of “Monsters” reflect the emotional journey and heartfelt reflections of James Blunt as he confronts the impending loss of his father. The song captures the bittersweet moments and the complex mix of emotions that arise when facing mortality and saying goodbye to a loved one. “Monsters” has resonated deeply with audiences worldwide, evoking empathy and introspection. Blunt decided to donate all of the profit made from the song to Help for Heroes and British Legion charities
