In a statement sent to church members, Redeemer announced that Keller “passed away this morning at age 72, trusting in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection. We are forever grateful for his leadership, heart, and dedication to sharing the love of Christ with others. While we will miss his presence here, we know he is rejoicing with his Savior in heaven.”

On June 7, 2020, Keller disclosed that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and promptly began treatment.

Keller requested prayers earlier this month after doctors discovered additional malignancies. “Unfortunately,” he explained, they were “in some quite inconvenient locations,” so the physicians advised him to repeat the procedure, this time targeting a different genetic marker of the malignancy.

Keller was also the chairman and co-founder of Redeemer City to City, an organization that prepares pastors for global ministry.

Keller was a successful novelist who wrote multiple New York Times best-selling books, including;

  • The Prodigal God: Rediscovering the Christian Faith’s Heart (2008),
  • Prayer: Awe and Connection with God (2014), as well as
  • Making Sense of GOD: An Invitation to the Skeptical (2008), whose sequel is The Reason for God: Believing in an Era of Skepticism (2016).
