However, Uecker made some jokes about hitting a grand slam. Uecker, for example, hit a grand slam home run off San Francisco Giants pitcher Ron Herbel on June 21, 1967.

Bob Uecker’s standard joke is that after he hit his grand slam, the Giants’ manager came out to the mound to take Herbel out, carrying Herbel’s suitcase.

Throughout his six-year career as a catcher, Uecker had a limited role in terms of hitting and primarily focused on his defensive skills. He finished his career with a .200 batting average, 14 home runs, and 74 runs batted in (RBIs).

Bob Uecker began a broadcasting career after retiring and has been a play-by-play announcer for Milwaukee Brewers radio broadcasts since 1971. Uecker became well-known for his self-deprecating wit and was a regular guest on late-night talk shows in the 1970s and 1980s, earning the nickname “Mr Baseball” from TV talk show host Johnny Carson.

Bob Uecker was named Wisconsin Sportscaster of the Year five times (1977, 1979, 1981, 1982, and 1987) by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, and he was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2011.

In 2001, Uecker was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. In 2003, he received the Baseball Hall of Fame’s Ford C. Frick Award, which is given to a broadcaster each year for “major contributions to baseball.” His self-deprecating and humorous speech was a highlight of the ceremony.
