Bill Perkins was a Democrat who served in the New York City Council’s 9th district from 2017 to 2021. Parts of Harlem in Manhattan are included in the district. Perkins previously served in the same seat from 1998 to 2005 and in the New York State Senate for the 30th District from 2007 to 2017.

Bill Perkins led the fight against lead paint and advocated for the five young men accused of rape in Central Park. Yusef Salaam, one of them, is now running for the city council seat Perkins once held, blaming him for their eventual acquittal.
