He was only 19 years old when he co-founded Loopt – a location-based social networking mobile app. He was able to raise over $30 million in venture capital for the company but unfortunately, it still failed to gain traction with enough users. It was acquired by the Green Dot Corporation for $43.4 million in 2012.

Altman also became a partner at Y Combinator in 2011 after initially working part-time. He was named the President of the company in 2014.

He shared that he hoped to expand the company to fund 1,000 new companies every year. He served as CEO of Reddit in 2014, which lasted for only eight days until he was replaced by Steve Huffman.

Altman is the founder and current CEO of OpenAI. It was launched in 2015 and raised $1 billion. However, it was abandoned until 2020, when Altman left his position at Y Combinator to fully focus on it.
